Is it better to have Rabbits in pairs?

My male rabbit is about 3-4months old now so I know he's going to have to be fixed soon. I want to get a partner for him (not for breeding) because I think he needs a play mate. I did some research and discovered that it's easier to get a fixed male and female to bond then it is for two female or two males to bond even if they are fixed. I want to get a female black lop and get her fixed of course. I plan on taking him with me to help choose who he likes but I wanted to make sure if a female would be better or would another male? I've talked to one of the pet stores about this and she said she's heard of males bonding better together then a male and female. What do you think I should do? I wont be getting another bunny till after I get my current bunny, Arthur, fixed.
